En 1966, el mundo buscaba nuevos cánones de belleza. Simultáneamente, Lesley Lawson —una joven de la clase trabajadora británica de 16 años— probaba suerte como modelo por la insistencia de una amiga.

En un casting le dijeron que era demasiado pequeña, que no tenía un cuerpo atractivo, pero que su rostro era interesante. Así la llevaron con el famoso estilista Leonard of Mayfair, quien estaba buscando modelos para probar su nuevo corte de cabello corto.

Luego de ocho horas de peluquería, el resultado fue tan espectacular que Leonard llamó a un fotógrafo para que le tomara varias fotos que el peluquero colgó en su salón.

Al día siguiente, una periodista de Daily Express visitó el salón de belleza y al ver las fotos quedó maravillada, tanto que le pidió a Leonard conocer inmediatamente a la modelo.

La periodista hizo que le tomaran más fotos a Lesley, y una semana más tarde apareció en la portada del Daily Express con una leyenda que decía: “La cara de 1966”. Más tarde fue votada como la “Mujer Británica del Año”.

Al año siguiente, ya había modelado en Francia, Japón y Estados Unidos, y había aparecido en las portadas de revistas como The Tatler o Vogue.

Su novio se convirtió en su representante y la convenció de que cambiara su nombre por el de Twiggy.

Tan famosa se volvió como modelo, que con el tiempo ninguna chica quería tener el busto grande que había predominado hasta entonces en las pasarelas.

De pronto había que ser delgada y elegante, como Twiggy.

Claro que la obsesión por los pechos grandes regresó, pero se mantuvo la delgadez que Twiggy había impuesto sobre las pasarelas.

Claro que el impacto social de Twiggy tuvo consecuencias. Hasta el día de hoy se dice que su aspecto adolescente promovió la exagerada delgadez durante décadas.

Posteriormente, la misma Twiggy se ha pronunciado en contra de la tendencia de las modelos demasiado flacas, y ha explicado que su peso era el natural cuando era una adolescente y fue descubierta.

“Era muy delgada, pero era esa mi constitución natural. Siempre comía con sensatez. Ser delgada estaba en mis genes”.

En 1970, Twiggy dejó las pasarelas y terminó con su novio. Desde entonces se dedicó a diversas actividades artísticas, como la actuación. Ganó dos Globos de Oro por su papel en la película The Boy Friend (1971).

También tuvo su propia serie de televisión, siguió modelando ocasionalmente y hasta escribió una autobiografía que entró en la lista de los libros más vendidos.

Hoy, a los 73 años, sabe el impacto que generó en el mundo y se dedica a causas de caridad de forma tan activa, que en 2019 fue nombrada Dama Comandante de la Orden del Imperio Británico.

In a casting she was told that she was too small, that she did not have an attractive body, but that her face was interesting.

So they took her to the famous stylist Leonard of Mayfair, who was looking for models to test her new short haircut.

After eight hours of hairdressing, the result was so spectacular that Leonard called a photographer to take several photos, which the hairdresser later hung in his salon.

The next day, a Daily Express journalist visited the beauty salon and upon seeing the photos she was amazed, so much so that she asked Leonard to meet the model immediately.

The journalist had more photos of Lesley taken, and a week later she appeared on the front page of the Daily Express with a caption that read: "The 1966 Face." She was later voted 'British Woman of the Year'.

The following year, she had already modeled in France, Japan and the United States, and had appeared on the covers of magazines such as The Tatler or Vogue.

Her boyfriend became her manager and convinced her to change her name to Twiggy.

She became so famous as a model that over time no girl wanted to have the large bust that had predominated until then on the runways.

Everyone suddenly had to be slim and graceful, like Twiggy.

Sure, the obsession with big breasts returned later on, but the thinness that Twiggy had imposed on the runways remained.

Of course, Twiggy's social impact had consequences. To this day it is said that her adolescent appearance promoted exaggerated thinness for decades.

Subsequently, Twiggy herself has spoken out against the trend of skinny models, explaining that her weight was natural when she was a teenager and she was discovered.

“I was very skinny, but that was my natural constitution. I always ate sensibly. Being thin was in my genes.”

In 1970, Twiggy left the runway and ended the relationship with her boyfriend. Since then she has dedicated herself to various artistic activities, such as acting. She won two Golden Globes for her role in the film The Boy Friend (1971).

She also had her own television series, she continued to model occasionally and even wrote a best-seller autobiography.

Today, at 73, she knows the impact she has made on the world and she is so active in charitable causes that in 2019 she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
